THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE at the Alex

THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE at the Alex in Birmingham. I have occasionally left the theatre after the first Act when the play truly was dreadful. Dear, dear dear this was a new low. I left the theatre before the end of Act One. I simply could not sit there and endure another minute of Michelle Collins hamming up her character Mrs Meers, as if she was in a pantomime. Without doubt the most appalling performance I have ever experienced at the Alex. It was hard to focus on the rest of the show because every time she crept on stage and started curling the ends of her mouth I just lost the plot. I can actually imagine with a top class comedy actress that this show could be wonderful on Broadway where it actually won Tony’s. Unfortunately the pale effort touring the UK at the moment is an embarrassing let down
