THE EXORCIST at the Birmingham Rep

May 8, 2017

THE EXORCIST at the Birmingham Rep did not really work for me. The iconic book and movie are so well imprinted in my brain, as I experienced them as a teenager during the incredible period of movie making in the 1970’s long before digital tricks took away all of the magic, so this play felt second rate. Second rate to a movie.

I also increasingly have a real problem with Bill Kenwright productions of this nature. He increasingly uses very basic theatrical sets and tricks, casting TV stars and recognisable scripts from movies for his touring productions. I felt sorry for the actors that were really doing their very best against the odds. Poor Peter Bowles – the power of Christ must have compelled him.

These Bill Kenwright productions all seem to suffer the same fate as feeling second rate to the excellent theatrical productions that now tour the UK. It is a brand name I shall be avoiding from now on
