MATILDA THE MUSICAL at the Cambridge Theatre

May 8, 2017

Roald Dahl’s MATILDA THE MUSICAL at the Cambridge Theatre is the second time I have seen this show. The first was at the Royal Shakespeare Courtyard Theatre in Stratford Upon Avon for the Christmas Show in 2010. It was brilliant then and it is brilliant now. Serendipity brought Tim Minchin to the RSC production team of Mathew Wachus and Dennis Kelly to create this unique masterpiece of musical theatre. Tim’s music and his lyrics are truly original and intelligent and emotionally touching lifting this clever story to new heights. Tim Minchin is a musical theatre genius. A Stephen Sondheim in the making.

The show has bedded into the West End where I am sure it will run for years and years as well as many other cities around the world. The cast are top class as one would expect. Craige Els was fantastic as the pivotal Miss Trunchbull. Miria Parvin is a perfect Miss Honey. I was very fortunate to see Sara Sheen in her West End debut play Matilda. Easily the most impressive young person I have seen in many years on a British stage. She nailed it.

There is so much to experience from MATILDA THE MUSICAL that one can go back again and again and again.
