A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester

May 8, 2017

Maxine Peake in Tennessee Williams A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester was a powerful and relevant performance. The perfect combination of probably the North’s Best actress in Williams’ Best play in the unique space of the Manchester Royal Exchange was theatrical alchemy.

The key to this space is that it removes the play from behind the proscenium and sets it in a stark modern space in the round exposing the script and performances completely to the audience. There are only the actors and the words and this heightens the tension creating an electric sense of reality. I was completely blown away by Maxine Peake and will be an eternal fan.I also felt that Ben Batt was excellent opposite her as Stanley Kowalski
