GROUNDHOG DAY at the Old Vic

September 24, 2016

Tim Minchin’s new musical GROUNDHOG DAY at the Old Vic left me with very mixed feelings. To be very honest at the end of the first Act I thought it was a total “turkey”. However the second Act was much more enjoyable with one scene actually involving some real song and dance.

It is an incredibly inventive production and it is full of very clever set design. However if you can understand I felt it was almost “over-creative” and simply seemed to lack the dance routines and the musical numbers that make up a musical. This show falls in between the cracks which in itself is interesting but not really entertaining.

However, it was completely worth the price of a ticket to see Andy Karl who plays the lead Phil Conors. He was just brilliant and it was his charisma and characterisation that kept my attention throughout the show.
