CATS at Birmingham Hippodrome

June 17, 2016

CATS at the Birmingham Hippodrome was an excellent production. Musical theatre in the UK has benefited so much from investment in regional touring productions. These shows sell out across the UK and have created a huge demand for talent which is increasingly supplied. There was a time when I would often wince at the dancing in musicals on tour in the UK. Every swing and ensemble performer in CATS performed wonderfully giving this show some real umph.

Elaine Page made the song MEMORY very famous from the original West End production. However I was literally blown into the back of my seat by Marianne Benedict as Grizabella singing MEMORY. I was disappointed with Joe Henry as MungoJerrie for two reasons. In the original show this was a fabulous Glam Rock character played by Paul Nicholas. The character is now “rap” which I did not like and the young Joe Henry really did not have the stage presence for the huge Hippodrome stage. Pity but it does not detract from an excellent production.
