SUNSET BOULEVARD at the London Coliseum

May 31, 2016

I first saw Glenn Close play Norma Desmond in SUNSET BOULEVARD on Broadway in 1995. I had seen Patti LuPone, Betty Buckley, Dianne Carrol, Elaine Page and Petula Clarke play the role at the Adelphi in the West End.

Glenn Close made her debut in the West End playing Norma Desmond in a semi-staged production of SUNSET BOULEVARD at the London Coliseum. She was magnificent. She brought a whole new dimension to the character because of her age and experience. She IS Norma Desmond on stage. Completely spellbinding bringing the show to a stop with rapturous applause after her performances of the songs “With One Look” and “AS If We Never Said Goodbye”.

Although this production did not have the grandeur of the original West End and Broadway productions with their astounding epic sets it did have clever staging of steps which worked. The seventy two piece orchestra of the English National Opera was within the set and made the rich symphonic score centre stage. This rich and full performance of the score lifted this production to a symphony concert level of performance. The supporting cast led by Michael Xavier, Fred Johanson, Siobhan Dillon were all first class. I particularly liked the choreography of the ensemble.

An astounding performance by Glenn Close with the a first class supporting cast and the ENO orchestra made this production into more of an epic event.
