NELL GWYNN at the Apollo Theatre

May 31, 2016

Gemma Arteton won the best actress in a comedy award at the Oliviers for her portrayal of NELL GWYNN in Jessica Swale’s new play at the Apollo Theatre. Well she exceeded my expectations with a bravura performance.

What also exceeded my expectations was the absolute delightful play by Jessica Swale. She has captured the life story of Nell Gwynn and told it in a restoration style comedy that resonates. I now understand how important Nell Gwynn really was in challenging centuries of dogma and giving women a leading position on the stage. I can now understand her special place in our mythology of English theatre. The Apollo stage through excellent design is transformed into a 17th century theatre creating the atmosphere of the time. An excellent ensemble cast make this more of an event with particularly brilliant performances by Michele Dotrice, David Rintoul and David Sturzaker.
