One of my favourite actors, Ralph Fiennes in one of my favourite play writer’s play THE MASTER BUILDER at the Old Vic. What is there not to like? Well actually the play. I do not know if it is this particular adaptation by David Hare that just does not work or whether this is the dud amongst the play writer’s works. The final act is particularly dreadful.

Despite the play’s shortcomings Ralph Fiennes gives a brilliant performance and is well supported by an exceptional cast. I particularly liked James Dreyfuss. Rob Howell has created a stunning simple set design with an artists pallet that frames each act perfectly. He makes the best of the Old Vic stage which I do not particularly like because it can feel so remote behind the overbearing proscenium arch.
