MACBETH at the Birmingham Rep

February 10, 2016

MACBETH by William Shakespeare at the Birmingham Rep. Main problem is that it is not really Macbeth by William Shakespeare – it is based on “Macbeth” but is by the directors Carrie Cracknell and Lucy Guerin. It is their contemporary reinterpretation using the plot, some of the text and dance. It would have been more honest to set expectations amd make that very clear in the marketing of this production.

I was disappointed that I did not get to see John Heffernan in the Shakespeare play which is what I was expecting. From what I did see he would be magnificent in the actual “play”. I also thought Cassie Layton was particularly poor as Lady Macbeth. I think the actors in general were handicapped in their performances because of the savage cuts to the text and the increasing importance of the dancers.

I did enjoy the overall experience. The set was excellent and gave an interesting flow to the production. I liked the music and the dance although sitting for just over two hours without a break was just too long!
