GUYS AND DOLLS at the Alexandra Theatre

December 11, 2015

Frank Loesser’s GUYS AND DOLLS at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham is Broadway musical comedy at its best. The musical numbers just keep coming and coming throughout this show. A good show has a least one or two tunes left in your head as you leave the theatre. After ‘Guys and Dolls’ your head is spinning with great great tune after great tune after great tune. As well as the great music, Frank Loesser is a genius with lyrics, each character is made known to us through clever and funny songs.

This production is polished. Great set and lighting. Thumping live band. Colourful well executed ensemble choreography. However this show is all about the characters. Jamie Parker as Sky Masterson and Siubhan Harrison Sarah Parker have fabulous singing voices. Gavin Spokes as Nicey Nicey Johnson and Ian Hughs as Benny Southstreet are a brilliant comedy double act.

This is the third time I have seen Sophie Thomson on stage. She was amazing in “Chicago” and “She Stoops to Conquer”. She was amazing in “Guys and Dolls” as Miss Adelaide. Along with Imelda Staunton she probably is the best character actress on the British Stage today. What a wonderful performance. Her rendition of the musical number “Adelaide’s Lament” is a show stopper.
