JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at the Birmingham Hippodrome

November 9, 2015

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at the Birmingham Hippodrome was a sumptuous production. A brilliantly conceived stage set and lighting, with powerful orchestrations played by an excellent band in the pit, gave this musical production a high quality foundation.

Neil Moors was particularly impressive as Caiaphas. However, unfortunately I was comparing the rest of the cast to the incredible performances I had seen only a couple years ago on the big arena production of this show. Rachel Adedeji as Mary cannot compare to Melanie C. Tom Gilling cannot compare to Chris Moyles as King Herod. Very unfortunately Tim Rogers was a very poor comparison to the incredible performance by Tim Minchin in the linchpin role of Judas Iscariot.

Glenn Carter has got the range for singing the role of Jesus Christ but most importantly in this production he can really act the role. The final crucifixion scene was very moving as we completely left the realm of musical theatre and the focus was completely on the drama. Glenn Carter carried this very difficult scene off without fault and added a dimension to this show that I have never before experienced.
