XANADU at the Southwark Playhouse

November 8, 2015

XANADU at the Southwark Playhouse is as “camp as Christmas”. I have never seen the movie on which it is based but Douglas Carter Beane took a box office flop and amplified the absurdity of the plot with well known tunes and theatrical magic to create a Broadway hit. This “high energy” production is delightful and kept a grin on my face from beginning to end.

A well structured Broadway show is often a star vehicle for young actors and older well known names. Carly Anderson as the leading lady Clio and Samuel Edwards as leading man Sonny set the bar high with excellent performances. Samuel Edwards is definitely a name to look out for in the future. Broadway to Southwark means the older names are not quite so big, but Nigel Barber as Danny/Zeus adds some Hollywood magic and Alison Jiear as Melpomene fills the whole auditorium with her voice and effervescent charisma. The Ensemble young supporting cast are full of the energy this show demands.
