THE SMALLEST SHOW ON EARTH at the Belgrade Theatre

October 17, 2015

THE SMALLEST SHOW ON EARTH at the Belgrade Theatre is Thom Southerland’s labour of love and it shows. This is a charming theatrical transfer of the wonderful 1957 movie into a stage musical. It is a great story with great characters held together by Irving Berlin musical numbers. I had a pleasant nostalgic feeling that I was watching a show at a matinee in an English Seaside resort.

The two young leads Haydn Oakley and Laura Pitt-Pulford are both wonderful. Laura reminded me of a young Julie Andrews. Ricky Butt is fabulous as Ethel Hardcastle. Liza Goddard is an excellent actress and she brought a lot of warmth to her part but she does not have a good enough singing voice to carry off her solo musical numbers.
