KINKY BOOTS at the Adelphi

October 17, 2015

I will be very surprised if KINKY BOOTS at the Adelphi Theatre is still around this time next year. There were plenty of spare seats in the performance I saw this weekend after the official opening last week. It could be my least favourite show in London and I would advise buying a ticket for the tour of “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” if you want to see a great show about drag queens or wait for a revival of “La Cage Aux Folles”.

Everything about this production is unimaginative. The boring flat pack set. The script is as flat as the set. The cliche drag costumes that lacked any glamour. But mostly I think the story is just not relevant to London in 2015. It was a great little film that has been reduced into a second rate show. I will be very surprised if it finds an audience in London.

Killian Donnelly and Matt Henry can both sing wonderfully and some of the songs are impressive as ballads, although I can’t remember a single tune. Amy Lennox makes her character Lauren stand out.

Very disappointing.
