RULES FOR LIVING at The National Theatre

August 4, 2015

A new play by Sam Holcroft, RULES FOR LIVING at the National Theatre was hilarious. It felt like a super charged Alan Ayckbourn with wonderful characters and I really was Laughing Out Loud. Maggie Service, Miles Jupp, Claudie Blakley and John Rogan are excellent. Deborah Findlay as the long suffering up tight mother is completely brilliant and Stephen Mangan as her very cool long suffering son brings a little touch of star power magic.

My only conflict was the staging on a basketball court using huge scoreboards which broadcast the character subtext “Rules for Living”. It was as if we were being schooled by the director as to how to understand the structure of the play. I think I prefer the subtext to emerge naturally or not within my own mind.

I can see this play becoming a big hit (possibly without the scoreboards) on tour and as a mainstay of amateur production companies all over the country.
