OKLAHOMA at Birmingham Hippodrome

August 4, 2015

Rogers and Hammerstein’s OKLAHOMA opened on Broadway in 1943 and is their only major show I have not seen before. Retrospectively I can see how this was the foundation of their incredible success. Great story with great characters and great songs. Simple when you know how.

These days shows on tour in the UK have all of the components of a big West End production, which is just as well considering ticket prices at the Birmingham Hippodrome. This show has a great set with a great cast and a great orchestra. I was particularly impressed with Ashley Day who plays the young lead Curly. He can sing, act and dance and I am sure we will be seeing much more of him.
