THE PRODUCERS at New Alexandra Theatre

June 9, 2015

Mel Brooks THE PRODUCERS on a UK tour at the New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham was immense, fun even considering the show on its first night ran about 40 minutes late! I saw the original production on Broadway more than ten years ago and I loved it. Jason Manford as Leo Bloom was excellent, David Bedella as Roger De Bris stole the scene whenever he was on stage with Louis Spence perfect casting as his assistant Carmen Ghia. However, it was Cory English as Max Bialystock who deserves the most praise for his amazing performance as the lead in this show.

Broadway musicals of this quality are put together with such a sound structure that one feels like the audience is part of the well oiled machine, laughing and clapping in all the right places. This tour has been put together very well and the show builds into a stunning second Act. Lovely to see Andrew Gordon-Watkins dancing and playing supporting characters as part of the chorus. I worked with him at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
