REBECCA at Birmingham Rep

June 9, 2015

Production company Kneehigh’s rehearsal base is a National Trust barn on the cliffs near Mevagissey in Cornwall. Daphne Du Maurier’s story REBECCA, adapted and directed by Emma Rice was written to be transformed to the stage in this place. The result is an atmospheric experience so captivating that I felt I was at the Cornwall coast. The design of this play is amongst the most incredible sets I have ever seen. The story is woven into the set with remarkable creativity from the very beginning as a small boat sinks to the bottom of the ocean. There is a connectivity between the actors and the set, props and puppets which creates a mesmerising cinematic flow. The creative team of Emma Rice, Leslie Travers, Tim Lutkin, Somin Baker, Ewan Wardrop, Ian Ross, Sarah Wright and Sarah Bird have created a very special unique production.

This is easily the best theatrical experience I have enjoyed at the Birmingham Rep.
