GYPSY at the Savoy

June 9, 2015

Imelda Staunton and Musical Comedy go together like Rogers and Hammerstein. She is nothing less than a real West End superstar. She should be Dame Imelda Staunton one day soon. Her portrayal of Momma Rose in Julie Styne and Stephen Sonheim’s musical GYPSY at the Savoy Theatre is the performance of a lifetime. The show was written for her! Ethel Merman originated the role of Momma Rose on Broadway.

GYPSY is Broadway at its very best. Momma Rose drags her daughters and troop of child actors from theatre to theatre in a never ending tour. The show has wonderful structure with a perfect balance of comedy and drama. The score if full of show stoppers. This West End First run is enhanced by the sensitive portrayal by Peter Davison of long sufferring agent Herbie. Lara Pulver as Momma’s daughter Louise has possibly the most significant character arc in the story which she performs to perfection. I also really liked Dan Burton who plays Tulsa.
