CARRIE THE MUSICAL at the Southwark Playhouse

June 9, 2015

CARRIE THE MUSICAL at the Southwark Playhouse was a theatrical experience not to be missed. I was somewhat obsessed with the movie when I was a teenager. I saw the RSC production of this musical when it premièred in 1988 and found it impressive but too far removed from the movie at the time.

Exceptional design and perfect casting drawing from the movie make this production something special. The Southwark Playhouse is an intimate venue. The young fresh cast bring this show alive. Evelyn Hoskins as Carrie is remarkable and Gabriella Williams, just graduating from Arts Ed as Chris makes an awesome debut. The extremely talented American singer and actress Kim Criswell is a tour de force as Margaret White, Carrie’s crazy mother.

Michael Gore’s score really impressed me. He has written a wonderful range of musical numbers for the characters. Dean Pitchford’s lyrics powerfully project the story through the characters. There are about twenty four musical numbers, some of them are catchy, some of them are beautiful and they are all very relevant to the plot propelling us along with every word. Great Show.
