The first performance of the 2015 UK tour of Jonathan Harvey’s play BEAUTIFUL THING in the Patrick Studio Theatre at the Birmingham Hippodrome felt very special. The play was first performed in London in 1993 and was a refreshing representation of first love amongst gay teenagers. It was special to watch this play in 2015 in the city where thirty year ago I first discovered love with my first boyfriend. BEAUTIFUL THING captures the innocence and the intimacy of that first love in a way that enabled me to remember how wonderful it is to find love.

It is an intimate play and it is presented in the intimate studio space of the Patrick Theatre which is important to appreciate this play. Sam Jackson as Jamie and Thomas Law as Ste are perfectly cast and bring a complete sense of belief to the central story. They are always lads yet they show enough sensitivity to give the characters the depth they deserve. Vanessa Babirye as Leah is hilarious and Gerard McCarthy gives a good supporting performance. I take my hat off to EastEnders regular Charlie Brooks who is the perfect casting for Sandra, Jamie’s Mom. She is an incredible stage actress and gives a powerful performance with her energy filling the stage.

Also worth mentioning is the very simple but very effective set design by Colin Richmond. BEAUTIFUL THING is a beautiful play.
