ALL MY SONS at the Birmingham Rep

April 16, 2015

Arthur Miller’s classic American Family drama ALL MY SONS at the Birmingham Rep by the Talawa Theatre company is a production of contrasts. Arthur Miller’s work has the possibility to really grip an audience and draw them into the plot. Leemore Marrett Jr is wonderful as the young Chris Keller and Ray Shell and Dona Croll give powerful performances as his parents Joe and Kate Keller.

Unfortunately Kemi-Bo Jacobs who plays the young Ann Deever very badly and sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the rest of the cast. Perhaps there are extenuating circumstances to her casting but she was not ready for this role, besides saying her lines there was nothing else to her performance.

“Was she paid for that?” and “the most wooden acting I have ever seen” were two comments I over heard whilst leaving the theatre. It is a real pity because this is a great play and it could have been a great production. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and this link amongst the principle roles was so weak that it detracted completely from the drama.
