THE RULING CLASS at Trafalgar Studios

March 12, 2015

Jamie Lloyd’s production of THE RULING CLASS by Peter Barnes is almost cartoon in its design and I think it strikes a timely anti-establishment chord. All of the characters are cartoonish caricatures except the lead role which by contrast is the ONLY real person on the stage. James McAvoy plays Jack, 14th Earl of Gurney, a role immortalised by Peter O’Toole in the 1972 film.

James McAvoy easily gives one of the most incredible stage performances you could see on the West End stage today and that is why this production works so well. The almost Spitting Image design of the production accentuates his transformation throughout the play. This is a play for anybody who feels that they just don’t fit in and wants to feel good about that.

Ron Cook as Sir Charles Gurney, Kathryn Drysdale as Grace Shelley, Serena Evans as Lady Clare Gurney, Elliot Levey as Dr Herder, Joshua McGuire as Dinsdale Gurney and Anthony O’Donnell as Daniel Tucker all give masterful comic performances. Paul Leonard and Forbes Mason play a multitude of comic roles all equally brilliant. However they are particularly hilarious respectfully as Mrs Piggot-Jones and Mrs Tedwell.

Both Delightful and Powerful.
