Tom Morton-Smith’s new play OPPENHEIMER at the RSC Swan Theatre is engaging and enlightening. I had the feeling whilst watching this play that it would make an even better movie. This is a story that needs to be told through the expanded possibilities of film or at least with a much more dramatic theatrical presentation. I am deadly serious when I say that think “Slava’s Snow Show” for the dramatic production values that would enhance the impact and potential audience of this play.

What works wonderfully in this play is an understanding of the individuals and their motivations. John Heffernan is one of the best actors on the British stage today and his portrayal of Oppenheimer is masterful. Ben Allen is wonderful as the Germanic Edward Teller. As with practically all RSC productions there is a stellar ensemble cast that lift the play with their high standards of performance.
