ASSASSINS at Mernier

December 22, 2014

There probably is not anyone in musical theatre that could approach the incredible genius of the lyrics and music of Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim’s ASSASSINS at the Menier Chocolate Factory does not disappoint. The Assassins are the nine Americans who shoot at eight American Presidents. 4 Hits and 4 Misses. It is a very clever tale from the perspective of each Assassin brought together by their common purpose.

The Menier is the perfect venue for this intimate show and Jamie Lloyd injects his special personal brand of energy, makes best use of the space and directs a top notch cast. I particularly liked Aaron Tveit as Booth, Jamie Parker as Lee Harvey Oswald and the Balladeer, and Simon Lipkin as the Proprietor. Catherine Tate played one of the Assassins and pulls off a convincing characterisation, although she stood out in the ensemble when it came to dance moves.

I love Sondheim’s haunting themes and the BAND for this production are particularly impressive with perfect pitch.
