THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST at the Alex
It seems to be the month of plays set in Edwardian Drawing rooms. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST on a UK tour at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham was possibly the best of them all
What made this production so special was the device that we are at the dress rehearsal of “The Bunbury Company of Players” version of the play. This means the casting is for the middle aged amateur company allowing more experienced actors to play the roles of the younger characters of Oscar Wilde’s play. This added dimension brings such depth to the play particularly because of Nigel Havers and Martin Jarvis who are both wonderful leads. Sian Phillips is the perfect Lady Bracknell.
