EAST IS EAST at Trafalgar Studios

December 13, 2014

Ayub Khan Din’s EAST IS EAST at the Trafalgar Studios is a seminal play which captures the cultural transformation within a British family caused by a mixed marriage with a first generation immigrant. It is very funny and a touching picture of how people and place make us who we are.

Ayub Khan Din who wrote the play from the point of view of Abdul, the eldest son forty years ago plays the role of George Khan the father in this production. There is an incredible unique authenticity to his performance. He is joined on stage by Jane Horrocks as his long suffering English wife who brings a sweet tenderness to her role as the mother torn between what is best for her children and loyalty to her husband.

Their six children are played by an excellent top notch cast: Taj Atwal, Nathan Clarke, Michael Karim, Ashley Kumar, Darren Kuppan and Amit Shah. Sally Bankes as Auntie Annie is wonderful.

This play is a pleasure to watch and it stirs deep thoughts about family. It will tour the UK after its West End engagement (At the Alex in Birmingham) and I would thoroughly recommend getting a ticket if you get a chance.
