BARNUM at the Curve

December 13, 2014

Cameron Mackintosh’s UK tour of Cy Coleman, Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble’s show BARNUM is real Broadway. It is not at all what I expected. It is much darker than I thought it would be and there is a really interesting true story to be told. The staging actually reminded of the incredible production of “Pippin” which I saw on Broadway earlier this year – I would not be surprised if the circus set from that show was a design template for this show.

This is a very high quality production with a well put together very talented cast and was well performed. However it is the charisma, and sheer stage presence of Brian Conley, who knows exactly how to ignite the atmosphere in a theatre that makes this show special. His personality and performance lifts this show. He is supported exceptionally by the very talented Linzi Hateley who really is one of the best female musical actors on the British stage today. These two make a great team and are a pleasure to watch together…
