SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE at Noel Coward Theatre

September 7, 2014

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE THE PLAY adapted for the stage by Lee Hall, designed by Nick Ormero, Music by Jane Gibson, Lighting by Neil Austin, Choreography by Jane Gibson and directed by Declan Donnellan is a triumphant transfer of Hollywood to the West End. What an amazing team of creatives.

This play captures all of the flow of cinema and is translated into a magnificent Elizabethan theatre setting. The play is structured into purposeful form through action presented in clever scene after scene. It felt like we were unwrapping theatre itself and revealing the secret heart of the cultural phenomenon of Shakespeare’s work.

The cast were incredible. Tom Bateman is dreamy as Will. Lucy Briggs-Owen has a voice and a way with words that just drew me into the centre of the action when she was on stage. Anna Carteret (Juliet Bravo) was a Regal Queen Elizabeth who somehow managed to remain above the play as if we were in her Royal presence.

If you are in London this summer then this really is THE PLAY to see.
