HANDBAGGED at Vaudeville Theatre

July 20, 2014

I expected just a comedy but HANDBAGGED by Moira Buffini at the Vaudeville Theatre in the West End is very clever. The play is set around the private audiences between the Queen and Margaret Thatcher. What is so clever is that the older Queen and the older Margaret Thatcher are reflecting on their younger selves. This multidimensional perspective gives so much more depth to the relationship and there are many opportunities for humour.

Marion Bailey as the older Queen Elizabeth is just hilarious with every single tiny movement. She is so expressive and has captured such a wonderful picture of her Majesty. Stella Gonet plays the elder Stateswoman Lady Thatcher with all of the regal grace she deserves. Lucy Robinson has captured the real spirit of the younger Queen Elizabeth. Fenella Woolgar must have been channelling the younger Margaret Thatcher because her performance was spookily too realistic. Jeffe Rawle gives some good supporting performances BUT this play is about the women by the women.
