DARKNESS AND LIGHT at Birmingham Hippodrome

July 20, 2014

Birmingham Royal Ballet’s production DARKNESS AND LIGHT brings together three completely different pieces by the choreographer Frederick Ashton. Les Rendezvous is an exquisite vehicle for Birmingham’s world class couple Nao Sakuma and Chi Cao and allows the couple to present their absolute mastery. Les Rendezvous is a beautifully constructed piece with a beautiful score from Daniel Auber. The second piece Dante Sonato is a beautiful tapestry of dance in an emotionally charged battle between the children of the light and the children of the dark. One of my absolute favourites Iain Mackay dances as always to perfection. The final piece Facade is a whimsical wander through the world of dance with scottish dancing, yodelling, polka, foxtrot, waltz, popular song and tango pasadoble on the menu. Kit Holder and Lewis Turner were particularly adorable dancing as a couple in their striped jackets and boaters. The Birmingham Royal Ballet never fails to delight.
