SHOWBOAT at Birmingham Hippodrome

July 8, 2014

The Cape Town Opera production of SHOWBOAT at the Birmingham Hippodrome was majestic. Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstien II’s 1927 epic Broadway show is the “Gone With the Wind” of musical theatre. SHOWBOAT feels like the original iconic cultural blueprint of the American South. What makes this production so special is the approach to the material by Cape Town Opera. There isn’t a hint of the whimsical in this classic production. Every character is played seriously to perfection and it works wonderfully. Every aspect of the production was staged beautifully and the Cape Town Philarmonic Orchestra gave me the feeling that I was genuinely swept away along the Mississippi for three hours.
