Ivo Van Hove’s production of the Arthur Miller classic A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE at the Young Vic is the play to see at the moment in London. Jan Versweyveld’s abstract design creates a template which lifts the action of the play into an almost mystical realm of the sacred. It reminded me very much of the Tony Award winning “Metamorphoses” at the Circle in the Square Theatre in New York in 2002/03.

I love American drama and this play ranks amongst the very best that I have seen. Mark Strong gives an awesome brooding performance as the lead character Eddie. Nicola Walker as his wife Beatrice and Phoebe Fox as his niece Catherine create the perfect balance allowing us to experience the dynamics within this troubled family. Emun Elliot as Marco and Luke Norris as Rudolpho, illegal immigrants from the extended Italian family, provide the spark which ignites the drama.

This play teaches about relationships, culture, history and allows us to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves.
