NEWSIES at Nederlander Theatre Broadway

May 8, 2014

NEWSIES at the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway had the audience screaming with their approval. I too was forced to get out of my seat for the standing ovation so as not to be the last man sitting. To be fair the guys in the cast deserve a standing ovation for their incredible dancing. The dancing and acrobatics by this young cast are truly amazing. Broadway amazing. Fresh out of college Corey Cott is incredibly cute as the young rebel lead Jack Kelly and LaVon Fisher-Wilson as Medda Larkin gives a barnstorming rendition of the musical number “That’s Rich”.

The original inspiration for the musical is a 1992 Disney film based on the New York City newsboy strike of 1899. When young newspaper sellers are exploited beyond reason by their bosses they set out to enact change and are met by the ruthlessness of big business. I think unfortunately it is the power of the big business of Disney behind this show which makes it just a crowd pleaser. Everything about this show is a little bit too earnest and there is more than a touch of the triumphant.

Plenty of talent to admire on stage but no real heart.
