The Old Vic has transformed it’s auditorium into theatre in the round for a season which begins with Jon Robin Baitz wonderful play OTHER DESERT CITIES. This is an extremely intelligently written play full of insight into the family life for those at the top end of American’s Republican party. The play is very well balanced between the five characters however it is the powerful family matriarch who dominates the drama. Sinead Cussack gives a superlative performance and for me really was one of the most incredible female leads I have ever seen. She played the real person beneath the veneer. Clare Higgins and Martha Plimpton complete the trio of excellent female performances. Peter Egan and Daniel Lapaine are also perfectly cast as the men and give good strong performances.

Robert Innes Hopkins design perfectly captures the Palm Springs atmosphere with his open plan “in the round” organisation. The central set draws us closer to the characters and works particularly well for this play. This simple and effective design with director Lindsay Posner’s ability to work well with his actors, bringing out the very best performances out of these very well written characters makes this play an absolute treat
