BLITHE SPIRIT at the Gielgud Theatre

March 31, 2014

The ticket to have this summer in the West End is for Noel Coward’s BLITHE SPIRIT at the Gielgud Theatre starring the 88 years young Dame Angela Lansbury. I have adored Angela Lansbury since I first met her in the Kings Norton cinema when I was 9. She was Miss Price, the apprentice witch in Disney’s “Bedknobs and Broomsticks”. It was a truly magical experience to see her very idiosyncratic and quite unique interpretation of the famous Madame Arcati on stage. Her spirit dance is something that has been burned into my memory of favourite theatrical moments. At the curtain call Dame Angela was genuinely delighted at the enthusiasm of the audience standing ovation for her.

This Michael Blakemore very well staged production of BLITHE SPIRIT is more than polished. Two of my very favourite British stage actors Janie Dee and Charles Edwards play the leads Ruth and Charles. Their on stage relationship has amazing chemistry and forms a gripping foundation around which the plot unfolds. Jemima Rooper is funny as Elvira and Patsy Ferran makes a stunning professional debut as the very funny maid Edith. Simon Jones and particularly Serena Evans give excellent supporting performances. This is an all round top notch cast at their best. These great performances around a true theatrical legend make this play an absolute delight.
