HYSTERIA at the Hampstead Theatre

September 30, 2013

Terry Johnson‘s HYSTERIA at the Hampstead Theatre was certainly not what I had been expecting. Antony Sher gives a brilliant performance as Freud which was about as far as my expectations went. In fact he was joined by an equally brilliantperformance by Adrian Schiller as Dali. Lydia Wilson as Jessica and David Horovitch as Yahuda complete the ensemble with excellent performances.

The play is more of a zany comedy verging on farce really yet somehow still very rooted into the very real and believable drama between the individual characters. They all did meet Freud although almost certainly separately. Johnson’s imagination takes us far deeper into the mind of Freud than I was expecting and I found this play quite revelatory. I don’t want to give anything away so I will just say I was very surprised and I am still thinking about the haunting imagery that was so cleverly conjured up by Mr Johnson. Brilliant theatre on so many levels.
