CANDIDE at The Swan

September 9, 2013

“That Blew my Mind” Mike said as we walked out of The Swan Theatre at the RSC last week. We had just seen Mark Ravenhill‘s new play CANDIDE inspired by Voltaire, and Mike’s comment really captured the experience. This production is a manic assault on the intellect and one is simply engaged by the effort to keep up with the narrative as we are led into and through the contrasting world settings of each different scene.

We have recently seen this same RSC ensemble cast in two productions at the Swan and they truly own this stage now. They have developed a fluidity which enables them to handle the material with such a deft touch that watching them perform is a pure delight. It is this combination of excellence in performance which carries us through the play effortlessly.

The juxtaposition of this fluidity in performance by this ensemble which draws the audience into the narrative in combination with the effort of engaging with concentration into the ever developing perspectives from the layers of narrative content is what literally blows the mind. Awesome theatre.
