Playing Cards – Spades

March 6, 2013

Robert LePage is a theatrical genius pushing at the boundaries of perception to create new forms to tell stories. Friday evening for two and a half hours without an interval we sat transfixed to a story about Las Vegas. “Playing Cards – Spades” at the Round House in Camden Town. From beginning to end there is a perfect flow of action through a series of different locations. The whole effect is created on a circular 360 degrees central stage with magical technical artistry.

I would best describe the experience as like that watching a foreign art film. I was reminded of movies like “Magnolia”, “Crash” and “21 grams”. The night after the show I dreamed the most film-like dream I think I have ever experienced. This is a show that stays in the mind.
