Old Money

March 6, 2013

I really like Sarah Wooley’s play “Old Money” at the Hampstead Theatre. A daughter/wife/mother played with such authenticity by Maureen Lipman is slowly finding herself after years of repression in her traditional roles. Tracy-Ann Oberman, Helen Ryan and Nadia Clifford all give great performances.

My only criticism is the design which an audience member next to me said looked like what was left after a sale in a lighting shop. The idea was to illuminate each scene with a different light-shade which was lowered from the bank of lights hovering above the stage. Somehow it took away some of the realism in the play and reminded me that I was in a theatre.
