Les Miserables – the movie

March 6, 2013

“Les Miserables” the movie is a masterful work of art. The movie medium excels in making a story real, here taking us back just a few generations into the desperate world of the poor in Europe. The movie makes the story epic and it felt like a biblical tale such as “Ben Hur” of the human struggle and the transformational power of love and compassion.

Director Tom Hooper’s experience with directing multi-camera close up TV and the choice to record the actors singing live on set brings a new unique dimension. We are so close to the actors faces when they are singing in extreme close up and there is an unconscious subtext communicated about the character giving the words great force of meaning.

Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Ann Hathaway, Samantha Barkes, Helena Bonham Carter and Sasha Baron Cohen all give captivating performances under the microscope of the extreme close up.
