Blue Orange

March 6, 2013

I was thoroughly engaged in Joe Penhall’s play “Blue Orange” at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham. Robert (Robert Bathurst) represents the establishment as the Consultant Psychiatrist in conflict with Bruce (Gerard McCarthy) a trainee psychiatrist who represents youth in the search of truth. In this case the truth about the correct diagnosis and treatment for a young black man who thinks he is the Son of Idi Amin Christopher (Oliver Wilson). This clever interplay between the three of them challenges our understanding of mental health and lays bare the challenges of making the right decision for the right motives. I LOVED it and it inspires me to write from my own experience of the battle between love and the love of power.
